This dataset provides information about springs in Texas including spring names, identification numbers, location, and, if available, water source and use. This dataset does not include every spring in Texas, but is limited to an aggregation of selected digital and hard-copy data of the Texas Water Development Board, the U.S. Geological Survey, and Capitol Environmental Services.
This electronic report was subjected to the same review standard that applies to all U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports. Reviewers were asked to check the attributes, projection, and geographic extent. The reviewers checked the metadata files for completeness and accuracy.
The dataset was also reviewed by a hydrologist on staff at the USGS. The reviewer examined the data for attribute errors.
Site information from the remaining data sources was analyzed to identify duplicate spring records. Database queries were used to match spring records already in the master site table to springs from other sources. Any new springs were imported into the master site table. Springs from 'twdbsprings.gb' (Texas Water Development Board, 2002) that did not initially match were subjected to a GIS-based proximity analysis. All springs within 3,000 meters were individually reviewed with the guidance of USGS 7.5-minute digital raster graphics (DRGs), and duplicate springs were marked. Springs from other source tables that did not initially match were individually reviewed with the guidance of USGS 7.5-minute DRGs. Data from 'All TSEWB Data (no WQ)' (Capitol Environmental Services, 2002) were digitized based on written description, copies of source maps, and DRGs.
If new or more accurate attributes were available from duplicate springs, the master site table was updated.
Notes on spring names: The spring name is interpreted to be the most widely published and (or) used name for the spring(s). All initial spring names were imported from digital and hard-copy data sources. However, many were changed according to Brune (1975, 1981) or USGS 7.5-minute DRGs. Alternate names are available in a separate alternate names table. Many springs do not have name information.
